BRASS MONKEY are the jaw-dropping and exciting collision between three folk music icons - mighty guitarist Martin Carthy MBE, concertina/accordion squeezebox virtuoso John Kirkpatrick and ex-Old Swan Band member Martin Brinsford on percussion, mouth-organ and saxophone – and two magical, classical brass musicians, Paul Archibald (trumpet) and Roger Williams (trombone.) Brass Monkey are embarking on a rare British tour promoting their latest eagerly-awaited CD, Head Of Steam, and they’re promising you a sizzling set of folk songs, polkas, quadrilles, hornpipes, marches and a lot more besides – so book early and bask in the wonderful, heady sound! |

CALAN are five dynamic young Welsh musicians who have delighted European and British festival audiences by promoting Welsh music wherever they go – including the giant Lorient Interceltique in Brittany. The birth of Calan came out of the work of trac, the all-Wales folk development body, who produced a young orchestra called Clerorfa, playing a thrilling hot-pot of stunning Welsh traditional tunes. Now there’s no stopping Bethan Rhiannon (accordion), Angharad Jenkins (Fiddle), Llinos Eleri Jones (harp), Patrick Rimes (fiddle) and Chris Ab Alun (guitar), who have just released Bling, Calan’s debut CD. Warning: Calan’s luscious music could melt your brain! |

ONE STRING LOOSE, those amazing Newport-based young hot-shots, are quickly expanding into an international festival folk fusion band – and they have their debut CD Kumquat to sell, too! Born in the Newport Irish Club sessions, OSL have been exciting audiences around the UK and Europe with their complex, dynamic arrangements of traditional and self-penned tunes, performed with jaw-dropping virtuosity and infectious joie de vivre. Their innovative style has been captivating all manner of people, including fellow musicians, casual listeners, purists, grandmothers and teenagers. The rapport between front man Scott McKeon and fellow band mates Jack Stewart, Joe Brady, Baz Barwick and new drummer Mike Griffiths draws the audience further into the weird and wonderful world of OSL all the time – set the controls for the heart of the sun… |

ROOTS & GALOOTS are an expert, marvellous, fun-filled bluegrass band who play festivals, pubs, weddings, ceilidhs and barn dances all the year round – and they come from West Wales! Champion banjo picker, ace guitarist and Newport Festival hero Chris Moreton, from the Gwent town of Usk, will be playing up a storm, and the fellow musicians are Bill Steele (guitar), Becky Lee (double bass), Roland Emmanuel (mandolin, guitar) and Roy Nicholls (fiddle). All the band have impeccable musical CVs – it should be a corker! |

ISAMBARDE - Chris Green (vocals, guitar, mandocello), Jude Rees (oboe, vocals), Emily Sanders (vocals, fiddle) came into this world possessed of an intrinsic ability to sing and play their instruments, wow audiences everywhere with their warm patter, good humour, dazzling instrumental skills and, generally, to be booked by everyone – including our hosts, Newport Folk Club! Based in Coventry, Isambarde will thrill you, move you and set you up after a Friday night’s listening, ready to face the whole weekend! |

ALLEGRIA - (pronounced ah-lay-gree-yah) derives from the Spanish greeting: “Happiness to all”. This lively Newport-based band have become a main topic of conversation at every venue they have played. Famed for their personal interpretation of gypsy music, Allegria consist of founder member Nico Pucacco, whose true passion started with flamenco guitar style and classical romance but then encompassed Django Reinhardt: lead guitarist Hywel Maggs, composer, producer and performer, whose freely improvised yet precise harmonious technique matches melody with elegance and emotion; and Dave “The Doc” Evans, who provides rhythm and energy on his contrabass. The versatility and homogenous elegance of these musicians will make their appearance at the 2009 Tredegar House Folk Festival a memorable encounter for all. |
